Articles for General Audiences
The most obvious writing I’ve done for general audiences is my book, More Than Words, but I’m also actively writing on other topics. A recent publication below about “book language” is aimed at parents and teachers. It describes why the language of speech and books is so different and how that affects children’s reading. Another example below is an article in Frontiers for Young Minds, a science journal for children. My colleagues and I described our research about the power of talking practice in learning a foreign language. It makes sense that practice speaking a new language would make you better at speaking, but we found something much more surprising. We found that practice speaking during language learning boosts students’ comprehension of the new language. In fact spending time with speaking practice improved comprehension more than comprehension practice itself.
